Each day I drag myself out of bed at 6:15am so I can meet up with my perky friends at 7am for a walk on the beach. We laugh, tell jokes, look for sea glass, interesting shells, and get charged up for the day.
One of my walking buddies is veterinarian Dr. Mary Kirby, so (of course) when we see beached fish we have to place them back in the water. And she has to greet to every single dog on our 3 mile walk.
This week and last we found two injured birds on the beach and I learned how to capture birds without getting beaked bloody. Last week's bird was about the size of a cat and could be held. Today's bird was huge with blue eyes. Mary had us running a mile back from Orchid (ugh) to her house for gloves and a garbage can to contain the bird. On both rescues, we drove the birds to Sebastian Inlet Beach Park and put them in holding pens. The Brevard Animal Control agency collects the birds from the holding pens and brings them to a wildlife rehabilitation center.
